Belgian Formula One Boom thanks to Vandoorne?

After a long stretch of thirst in Formula 1, the hopes of Belgian motorsport fans now rest entirely on Stoffel Vandoorne. After the superior victory in the GP2 2015 and a season in the Japanese Super Formula, next year the Belgian gets his chance at McLaren.

Jacky Ickx, the most successful Belgian racing driver, hopes, that Vandoorne can trigger a motorsport boom with good performance –as has already happened in the neighbouring country.

I hope that he triggers the same enthusiasm as Max Verstappen in the Netherlands,”says Ickx in an interview with the Belgian newspaper’Le Soir’. However, Vandoorne has a tough nut to crack at McLaren, as his teammate will be no less than Fernando Alonso. And that is exactly who Vandoorne should be targeting, advise him Ickx.

“You need to make one thing clear now: Alonso is your worst enemy!”, says the two-time World Champion of Formula One in the direction of his young compatriot and explains: “I don’t mean to be mean, but you just have to have one goal: to be faster than him.”

Criticism of the development of sport

who, during his career, won eight Grand Prix and six times the 24-hour Le Mans Prix, but hardly called for concrete advice.” I am now more of a spectator than an expert, because sport has nothing more to do with what I have experienced,”he says.

In his opinion, sport has not changed for the better.” Formula 1 and motor sports in general are no longer geared to the interests of the public. People want to see a show and see heroes, not cars that have to drive behind the safety car forever just because it’s raining,”criticizes Ickx.
